Wheeling penalties mount in 2nd straight defeat to Checkers

The Charlotte Checkers and veteran winger Dusty Jamieson are enjoying the new ECHL.

It's the same league with an emphasis on opening the game. A 5-3 Charlotte victory against the Wheeling Nailers on Saturday night was an example of how some teams will benefit.

The league has instructed officials to more closely call penalties that impede a player's progress with the puck.

"It's designed to speed up the game and help the skill players, and I think it will speed up the game," Checkers coach Derek Wilkinson said. "It's going to take some time for everyone to get used to. Teams who can skate will be able to force the other team into penalties, and we did a good job of that this weekend."

For the second straight night, Jamieson, who led the Checkers (2-0) in goals last season, recorded a hat trick, with two on the power play. And after scoring an ECHL-record eight power-play goals on 18 attempts during Friday's 10-3 victory against the Nailers (0-2), the Checkers got 22 more power-play chances.

They came out of a bizarre first period, in which they went on the power play 11 times, with a 3-0 lead.

The Nailers got goals four minutes apart midway through the period to trim the lead to 4-3.

But Jamieson wrapped up the victory with an empty-net goal with 1:05 to play.

Note

• The Checkers' next games are Friday and next Sunday at Florida. Their next home game will be Nov. 3 against Gwinnett.

Wheeling's Rally Falls Short, in 5-3 Loss to Charlotte

The Wheeling Nailers are still looking for victory number one, as they came out on the wrong side of a 5-3 score, in their second straight loss to the Charlotte Checkers, at the Charlotte Bobcats Arena. The Nailers are 0-2 on the season, and 0-2 on the road, and will be glad to be leaving North Carolina, as this was the final meeting between the Nailers and Checkers this season.

Charlotte got on the board at 3:17 with a Bruce Graham blast that handcuffed, Wheeling goalie, Andy Franck, to give the Checkers their 1-0 lead. The Nailers then began to take penalty after penalty after penalty, and the Checkers, much like last night, would use their power play chances to break this game wide open. Daymen Rycroft scored at 11:02, to give Charlotte a 2-0 lead. The Checkers would have another big night from Dusty Jamieson, who scored his first of three goals, at the 12:45. Wheeling, who surrendered 11 power plays, was only able to get one shot on Checkers goalie, Alex Westlund. The Nailers left the first period down 3-0, and that was due to the play of Andy Franck, who did his best fending off several 5-on-3 chances for Charlotte.

The second period, saw the Nailers get some jump in their skates, and they began to get a few nice shots on Westlund. The hard work paid off, as Ned Havern slipped the puck past the Checker goalie and into the net, at 7:29 ,to cut the deficit to just 3-1. Franck would again look strong, as he kept the Checkers from adding to their lead, and it was 3-1 Charlotte after two periods.

The Nailers fell back into penalty trouble in the final period, and it cost them. Dusty Jamieson scored his second goal of the night at 7:11 on the power play, and gave the Checkers a 4-1 lead. Wheeling did not give up, as they struck back with a Grant McNeill short handed goal at 11:36, and now the lead for Charlotte was sliced in half. The Nailers got to within a single goal, as Sean Collins rung the bell for the first time this season, at 15:31. Wheeling had the momentum and during the waning minutes, Coach Patrick pulled Andy Franck for the extra skater. The Nailers had a chance to two to tie the game, but Alex Westlund shut the door. Dusty Jamieson, for Charlotte, would then end the hopes of the Nailers with an empty net goal at 18:55 to earn his second hat trick in as many games. In the end the Nailers lost 5-3, and lost the season series to Charlotte 0-2.
