CHECKERS HANG ON FOR 4-3 WIN AT SOUTH CAROLINA

KOZAK'S TWO GOALS, PETRUZALEK'S RETURN SPARK CHECKERS IN ROAD VICTORY

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - A pair of goals from right wing Rick Kozak, and the return of forward Jakub Petruzalek from an American Hockey League assignment sparked the Charlotte Checkers to a 4-3 victory over the South Carolina Stingrays Friday night in Charleston. Kozak’s second goal of the night at 14:23 of the third period proved to be the game winner, and came just 21 seconds after the Stingrays had tied the game at 3-3.

Petruzalek, just back from a short stint with the Checkers AHL affiliate in Hartford, notched two assists while Charlotte’s leading scorer Mark Lee, also chipped in with two helpers. Zdenek Bahensky snapped an eight-game pointless streak with his first goal since opening night, while Blake Bellefeuille notched his fourth lamp-lighter of the campaign.

Checkers goalie Chris Holt won his fourth straight with 28 saves to raise his record to 5-1-0. Davis Parley took the loss in net for the Stingrays with 25 saves. Cail MacLean also scored twice for South Carolina.

“It was a good win for us tonight,” remarked Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson. “We haven’t played as many games as the rest of the teams in our division so they’ve got their legs more than we do right now. Rick Kozak broke through tonight with a pair of goals and Chris Holt was solid again between the pipes.”

Charlotte started quickly as Bahensky rifled a shot by Parley in the slot off a beautiful feed from Petruzalek for a 1-0 Checkers advantage just 3:44 into the game. South Carolina’s Chris Chaput and the Checkers Bellefeuille traded goals later in the period to give Charlotte a 2-1 lead after the first 20 minutes.

Three minutes into the second period the Checkers went up 3-1, as Kozak’s blazing shot from the right circle found its way to the back of the net. MacLean would tip in a shot past Holt at 12:43 to cut the Charlotte lead to 3-2 at the second intermission.

In the third period with Kenny Smith off for interference, MacLean scored his second of the night at 14:02 on the power play to knot the score at 3-3. Charlotte would re-capture the lead just 21 seconds later as Bahensky shoveled the puck out in front to Kozak who jammed home the game winner.

The Checkers victory raised their overall record to 7-3-0 for 14 points, and improved their road record to 4-1-0. South Carolina’s record dipped to 7-5-1 for 15 points.

The Checkers return home Saturday night to host the Gwinnett Gladiators at Charlotte Bobcats Arena at 7:30 p.m. Charlotte has lost nine straight games to the Gladiators dating back to last season. “We play the Gladiators in three of our next four games and we’re certainly due for a win against them,“ said Wilkinson.

Saturday night’s home game against Gwinnett, will be “Redneck Hockey Night” sponsored by Hardees. The first 2000 fans entering the arena will receive a free, Checkers “Truckers Cap” compliments of Hardees, the home of the Thickburger..

TIEBREAKER RESULTS FROM GOALMOUTH SCRAMBLE

Observer News Services

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - Every time South Carolina threatened Friday night the Charlotte Checkers had a response.

Rick Kozak's tie-breaking goal with 5 minutes, 37 second left gave Charlotte a 4-3 ECHL victory. The Checkers have won six of the past eight meetings at the North Charleston Coliseum.

Kozak's second goal of the game decided matters, jamming the puck past goaltender Davis Parley from out of a scramble in front of the net.

South Carolina twice pulled Parley for an extra skater in the waning minutes. The Stingrays had one last, good scoring chance, but Dusty Jamieson blocked the shot as time expired.

Charlotte will host Gwinnett at 7:30 tonight at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

SOUTH CAROLINA STINGRAYS PRESS RELEASE

CHECKERS SLIP PAST STINGRAYS, 4-3

NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - Rick Kozak scored two goals including the game-winner in the third period to give the Charlotte Checkers a 4-3 win over the South Carolina Stingrays before 4,620 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum.

“We played a good game tonight but it just didn’t fall in our favor,” South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons said. “Maybe some changes are needed, so guys don’t get complacent. We have two more divisional games this weekend. We have to start winning again.”

Charlotte (7-3-0, 14 points) opened the score at 3:44. Zdenek Bahensky netted his second of the season beating Davis Parley. Jakub Petruzaluk and Kirk DeWaele garnered assists.

South Carolina (7-5-1, 15 points) tied the score at 1-1, as Chris Chaput scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season getting the puck by Chris Holt. Helpers went to Scott Romfo and T.J. McElroy, who registered his first professional point.

The Checkers number one ranked power play converted at 13:46 of the first. Blake Bellefeuille re-directed a Mark Lee point shot to make it 2-1 for Charlotte.

In the second, Kozak buried his second of the campaign to give the Checkers a 3-1 advantage.

Stingrays captain Cail MacLean got the South Carolina within one, as he tipped home a Jamie Fraser shot at 12:43 of the middle stanza. Peter Szabo also picked up an assist.

MacLean tied the score at 3-3 by potting a power play goal at 14:02 of the third from Chaput and Schwabe.

But 21 seconds later, Kozak registered the eventual game-winning goal on an innocent looking play as he came from behind the South Carolina net.

South Carolina converted on 1-of-7 power play chances, while Charlotte also went 1-for-7. Stingrays outshot the Checkers 31-29.

STINGRAYS' COMEBACK FALLS SHORT

by Andrew Miller

South Carolina Stingrays captain Cail MacLean said the Stingrays showed plenty of character Friday night against Charlotte.

Character, however, wasn't enough for the Stingrays.

Rick Kozak had two goals and Chris Holt stopped 28 shots to lead Charlotte past South Carolina, 4-3, before a crowd of 4,620 at the North Charleston Coliseum.

The Stingrays, who are winless in their last three games, dropped to 7-5-1 (15 points) on the season. The Checkers improved to 7-3-0 (14 points).

For the second straight home game, the Stingrays showed plenty of grit and guts, battling back from a two-goal deficit to tie the game. On Tuesday, the Stingrays rallied from a two-goal deficit against Augusta to force a shootout against the Lynx.

"We're pretty disappointed in here with this loss," MacLean said. "We did battle back. We did show a lot of character, but the moral of the story is that we can't keep spotting teams one and two-goal leads and expect to win. It's just too difficult against the caliber of goalies in this league to come back every night."

The Stingrays found themselves trailing 3-1 midway through the second period after goals by Kozak, Blake Bellefeuille and Zdenek Bahensky.

The Stingrays answered with a goal from Chris Chaput and then closed the gap to a single goal on MacLean's goal with seven minutes left before the second intermission.

"We're missing Marc Busenburg and Matt Reid, two of our veteran leaders," said South Carolina coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "I thought tonight our other veteran, Cail MacLean, really stepped up and played a great game and showed great leadership out there."

MacLean tied the game at 3-3 with a power play goal off a nice assist from Chaput with six minutes left in the game.

But the Stingrays' celebration lasted only 21 seconds as Kozak scored his second goal to give the Checkers a 4-3 advantage with 5:37 left in regulation.

Slap shots

--Veteran defenseman Marc Busenburg was called up to Hershey, of the American Hockey League on Thursday. Busenburg played in all 12 games for the Stingrays with six points on three goals and three assists.

--Winger Matt Stefanishion is expected to be in the lineup for the Stingrays tonight against Columbia. Stefanishion, who started the season in Hershey, was assigned to the Stingrays by the Bears Friday afternoon.
