CHECKERS PRESS RELEASE (http://www.gocheckers.com/fullstory.php?id=570)

LARGEST CROWD OF THE SEASON SEES CHECKERS DEFEAT FLORIDA 3-2 ON "80'S NIGHT"

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Charlotte Checkers rocked their largest crowd of the season on and off the ice Friday night at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Before an "80's night" crowd of 9,570, the Checkers (24-15-3 for 51 points) knocked off the Florida Everblades 3-2 to win their sixth straight home game.

The victory was Charlotte's seventh in its' last eight games overall, and raised its’ record to 7-1-2 in its' last ten games. Daymen Rycroft, Mark Lee and Hugh Jessiman scored goals for the Checkers, while Chris Lee had both Florida tallies.

Charlotte goalie Alex Westlund gained his fourth win in his last five starts with 24 saves to improve his overall record to 11-5-3. Florida's rookie netminder David Schantz, a second round draft pick of the NHL's Florida Panthers, absorbed the loss with 26 saves.

"We felt that those three early-January games in Florida were a turning point for our season," said Charlotte Coach Derek Wilkinson. "We played well in those games even though we didn't get as many points as we would have liked. To beat a team like Florida, who statistically is one of the best teams in the league, is a good sign for us. Tonight when it was five-on-five, we played great."

The Checkers scored first at 11 minutes, five seconds of the first period as Rycroft pecked away in front of the Everblades goal, finally urging the puck across the line for a 1-0 advantage. Charlotte has had trouble at times this season getting off to fast starts, but Friday night was not one of those nights. The Checkers had good jump from the opening whistle, dominated play, and finished the first period with a 15-8 shot advantage.

Charlotte increased its' lead to 2-0 just 1:24 into the second period, as Mark Lee capitalized on a Checkers' odd-man rush for his 13th goal of the season. The game's momentum changed suddenly due to a rash of Charlotte penalties early in the period. Referee Richard Leonard called four consecutive minors against the Checkers, creating two, two-man advantage power plays for the Everblades. Florida (26-14-2 for 54 points) wasted little time taking advantage as Chris Lee scored twice in a minute and a half span, each time scoring on a slapshot from between the circles. The Checkers spent the majority of the period killing off the six minor penalties they were assessed which slowed their early-game momentum. However, two minors late in the second period against the Everblades proved to be a key factor in the Checkers win.

In the first minute of the third period and with the Checkers enjoying a two-man advantage, Jessiman buried 30 footer by Schantz to give Charlotte a 3-2 lead. The stingy Checkers defense limited Florida to only six third-period shots, and the few quality chances the Everblades did muster were thwarted by solid goaltending by Westlund. Florida pulled its’ goalie for an extra attacker, but the Checkers held their ground and secured the one-goal victory.

The Checkers will close out the week Saturday night in Pensacola where they’ll meet the Ice Pilots for the fourth time this season at The Hangar. Saturday’s face-off time is 8:00 p.m. Eastern time. Charlotte will return home to begin a three-game homestand Thursday at 7:00 p.m. at Charlotte Bobcats Arena when they’ll host the South Carolina Stingrays. Game two of the homestand will be Saturday, February 10 against the Texas Wildcatters at 7:30 p.m., with game three Sunday afternoon, February 11 at 4:00p.m. versus the Columbia Inferno.

NOTES: Charlotte goalie Alex Westlund was recalled after Friday’s game by the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack…….Following Friday’s win over Florida, the Checkers are now 2-3-2 versus the Everblades in the ten-game season series.

CHECKERS FRIDAY NIGHT SCRATCHES: Dusty Jamieson, John Donnelly, Rick Kozak, Nathan Gillies and Adam Nightingale.

CHARLOTTE OVERCOMES 10 PENALTIES
Jessiman scores winner in 3rd period

by CLIFF MEHRTENS (cmehrtens@charlotteobserver.com)

CHARLOTTE, NC - Even with 30 games left, it's OK for the Charlotte Checkers to check the ECHL standings.

"Playoff hockey for us starts right about now," said goalie Alex Westlund . "There are six good teams in our division and one of them's not going to make it."

Charlotte stayed strong in the mix with a 3-2 victory against the Florida Everblades at Bobcats Arena on Friday in front of a crowd of 9,570. The Checkers (24-15-3) were strong behind Westlund's 24 saves and goals by Daymen Rycroft, Mark Lee and Hugh Jessiman.

Charlotte won its sixth straight at home, and withstood a stream of players in the penalty box in the second period.

The frustrating part was seven Checkers penalties in the second period. The teams had combined for one in the first period. Twice Florida had two-man advantages in the second, and both times defenseman Reggie Lee pumped in slapshots. It erased Charlotte's 2-0 lead.

"They called nothing in the first, and threw the book at everybody in the second," coach Derek Wilkinson said. "It's difficult to play when you don't know the standard that's going to be called. I wasn't necessarily mad at what he called, but the fact that he started calling it in the second period."

Charlotte didn't lose its' mental edge, and maintained a physical presence against Florida, one of the ECHL's better skating teams.

Jessiman, who has eight goals in 12 games, scored the winner 48 seconds into the third period. He took a cross-ice pass from Brian Rodney and whistled in a slapshot from the high crease.

Westlund took over from there, and made three solid saves in the final three minutes.

"It's just good to beat a good team," he said. "We need points against Florida. We need them against any team in our division. Getting two points is huge. The pressure is on everyone in our division, every single night."

FLORIDA EVERBLADES PRESS RELEASE (http://www.floridaeverblades.com/news/story.cfm?ID=189)

EVERBLADES FALL TO CHECKERS, 3-2

CHARLOTTE, NC - The Florida Everblades (26-14-2) lost a 3-2 decision to the Charlotte Checkers (24-15-3) on Friday night at Charlotte Bobcats Arena in front of a crowd of 9,570.

The Checkers, who carried the play throughout the opening period, drew first blood in the contest when Daymen Rycroft poked a loose puck at the top of the crease past Everblades goaltender David Shantz at 11:05 to open the scoring. A wild second period ensued with the teams combining for three goals in the first four minutes of the frame. The Checkers began the barrage on Mark Lees 13th goal of the season completing a 3-on-2 rush by slipping a shot past Shantz at 1:24.

The Everblades however began their comeback shortly after. Chris Lee tallied a pair of 5-on-3 power play goals to even the score by the four-minute mark. Lees first of the night and sixth of the season came at 2:18 on a wrist shot from the top of the right circle that found the upper left corner of the net. His second came just 1:28 from the high slot and into the same spot as his first, above the glove of Checkers net minder Alex Westlund. Reggie Berg and Chris Dyment assisted on both goals.

The Checkers regained their lead however, early in the third period when Hugh Jessiman tallied a power play goal with a slap shot from the top of the left circle just 48 seconds into the frame. Despite their best efforts, the Everblades couldnt find the tying goal over the remaining 19 minutes, allowing the Checkers to win their second straight and the seventh game in their last eight contests.

In goal Shantz suffered the loss to drop his record to 12-7-1 after allowing the three goals on 29 shots, while Westlund raised his record to 11-5-1 by stopping 23 of 25 Florida shots.

On the power play, the Everblades finished off the night 2-for-9, while the Checkers closed out the night 1-for-5.

CHECKERS EDGE BY BLADES IN 3-2 WIN

by KEITH CANNON

CHARLOTTE, NC - The rivalry between the Florida Everblades and the Charlotte Checkers has been pretty one-sided for most of this ECHL season.

But Charlotte's 3-2 victory over Florida on Friday, only their second in five games with the Blades this season, comes at a critical time in the stretch run for these South Division teams.

"We don't play any more games out of our division, so every game is a four-point game now," Florida coach Gerry Fleming said.

Hugh Jessiman's power-play goal 48 seconds into the third period erased a two-goal Blades' comeback and gave Charlotte its first home victory over Florida, in front of 9,570 fans at Charlotte Bobcats Arena.

The loss narrowed the gap in the standings between third-place Florida and fifth-place Charlotte to three points. Charlotte has won seven of eight.

"We've taken it to these guys in the last few games we've played them, so I think they came out pretty motivated," said defenseman Chris Lee, who scored both Florida goals on second-period power plays. "But we responded pretty well."

The Checkers had a 1-0 lead after a conservatively played first period. Daymen Rycroft scored out of a scrum in front of the crease at the 11:05 mark. And they went up 2-0 a minute and 24 seconds into the second period on a goal by Mark Lee.

But then the penalty box opened and Charlotte couldn't stay out of it. The Checkers took seven penalties in the second 20 minutes and gave the Blades three 5-on-3 power-play chances. Florida took advantage of two of them, about a minute-and-a-half apart, on nearly identical plays.

Lee scored from between the circles 2:18 into the period, taking a feed across the slot from Chris Dyment. The two repeated the feat at the 3:46 mark, with Lee wristing the puck past Charlotte goaltender Alex Westlund from the edge of the left circle.

"You couldn't have drawn them up more alike," Lee said. "(Dyment) got the puck to me and I had an open lane to shoot. I was lucky enough to beat the goalie twice."

But the Checkers regained the lead by taking advantage of two Florida penalties. Charlotte started the third period with a 5-on-3 power play and went back in front on Jessiman's successful slap shot from the left circle.
