<!-- begin body-content -->The Charlotte Checkers lost their top goaltender, but it might not be for long.

Alex Westlund, 11-5-1 with a 2.86 goals-against average and two shutouts, was recalled by the Hartford Wolf Pack, the New York Rangers' affiliate in the American Hockey League.

Westlund will replace Al Montoya, who sprained his knee last weekend and is expected to be out about 10 days.

"We don't think it will be for too long," Charlotte coach Derek Wilkinson said. "We'll probably use an emergency backup (goalie) Thursday, until we find out more about the injury."

Fellow Rangers prospect Chris Holt (13-11-2, 3.06) will handle net duties in Westlund's absence. He played 10 straight games when Westlund was out with a knee injury in November and December.

Briefly

• Hartford also recalled defenseman Corey Potter, a rookie who has six goals and 13 assists in 43 games. Defenseman John Donnelly was activated.

• Defenseman Bryan Rodney has an assist in five straight games. ... Winger Daymen Rycroft has a goal in three of the past four games.

• Charlotte's largest crowd of the season -- 9,570 at Friday's game -- was its ECHL-leading fifth sellout. Capacity is 6,800 at Bobcats Arena, but the upper level can be opened to accommodate larger crowds.

• Charlotte didn't get overly frustrated when it was whistled for seven second-period penalties during Friday's 3-2 victory against Florida.

"You've got to take your frustrations out on the opposition, as opposed to the officials, hard as it is to do," Wilkinson said. "One of the great things about hockey is that you can go hit somebody else, and take your frustrations out. That's what we did."

• Defenseman Dan Girardi, who began his career with Charlotte last season, made his NHL debut Jan. 27 with the Rangers.

• Injury update: Adam Nightingale (concussion) could return this week; Nathan Gillies (knee) and Rick Kozak (concussion) will be out at least another week; Dusty Jamieson (neck) is out indefinitely.
