Checkers Press Release

CHECKERS GET HAT TRICK FROM MARK LEE TO WIN SIXTH STRAIGHT, 4-1 AT GWINNETT

The Charlotte Checkers are red-hot and playing their best hockey of the season. Equally hot is winger, Mark Lee, who had a hat trick in leading the Checkers to a 4-1 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators Tuesday night in Duluth, Georgia.

Charlotte goalie Chris Holt won his second straight since returning Sunday from a stint with Hartford in the American Hockey League. Holt made 36 saves and Mike Ouellette added an empty-net goal as the Checkers won their sixth straight and seventh in their last eight games. Blake Bellefeuille also assisted on all three Lee goals.

The win gave Charlotte 85 points, just two behind Gwinnett's 87. The Checkers are in fourth place in the ECHL's South division, while the Gladiators hold down third place. Charlotte (41-25-1-2) holds one game in hand on Gwinnett in its quest to secure the third spot in the division, and avoid the mini-series playoff between the fourth and fifth place teams.

The Checkers ended up winning the nine-game season series against the Gladiators going 5-4-0 against Gwinnett. It's the first time Charlotte has won a season series against the Gladiators since Gwinnett came into the ECHL in 2003.

"We came out very business-like tonight and played solid in all areas," remarked Charlotte Coach Derek Wilkinson. "This group is playing with a lot of confidence right now, and really has been for several weeks now."

The Checkers jumped out to an early lead at 5 minutes, 15 seconds of the first period. Lee scored his first of the night off helpers from Bellefeuille and Ryan Constant. The Gladiators replied with a power-play goal from the center point by Jon Awe at 9:38, and the two teams went to the locker room after one period tied at 1-1.

Charlotte took the lead for good a little over a minute into the second period, as Lee scored short-handed off a two-on-one break for a 2-1 advantage. The Checkers increased their lead to 3-1 midway through the period when Bellefeuille sprung Lee away on a breakaway. Lee deked Gwinnett goalie, Dave Caruso, and then completed his hat trick with his 26th goal of the season.

In the final period the Checkers played tight defense with Holt making several timely saves to keep the Gladiators away from the scoreboard. With Caruso pulled for a sixth attacker, Ouellette found the empty net with 22 seconds left in the contest to seal the 4-1 win.

The Checkers will continue their busy four-game week back at Charlotte Bobcats Arena Wednesday night hosting the Texas Wildcatters at 7:00 p.m.

CHECKERS 4, GLADIATORS 1

Charlotte rolls on with 3 Lee goals (http://www.charlotte.com/323/story/73521.html)
6th straight victory slices Gwinnett lead

DULUTH, Ga. --Mark Lee looked like the ECHL's player of the week, and the Charlotte Checkers are better off today because of it.

Lee, who had three goals and six assists in four victories last week to win the league honor, chalked up three goals Tuesday to boost Charlotte to a 4-1 victory against Gwinnett.

The Checkers (41-25-1-2) have won six in a row and nine of 11 to close within two points of the Gladiators (40-23-5-2) for third place in the South Division. The fourth and fifth seeds will play a best-of-3, first-round series. That's something the top three will avoid.

Lee had five goals and 10 assists as Charlotte took five of nine games from Gwinnett.

Tonight at 7 at Bobcats Arena, the Checkers will face division-leading Texas with a chance to draw closer.

The ECHL's best penalty-killing unit also got the best of the best power play.

Charlotte allowed one power-play goal in nine opportunities. Gwinnett led the ECHL on the power play at home with 25.7 percent (61-for-237) and overall power play (24.1 percent).

Charlotte, however, is tops at killing penalties (87.1 percent).

Gladiators Fall to Checkers 4-1
GWINNETT SETS NEW POWER PLAY GOAL RECORD WITH 116th

Despite setting a new ECHL record for power play goals in a season, Gwinnett could not stop Charlotte as the Checkers won their sixth straight game defeating the Gladiators 4-1 on the Your Best Rate Financial Home Ice at the Arena at Gwinnett Center on Tuesday night. Gwinnett is now just 2 points ahead of Charlotte in third place in the South Division as the Gladiators fall to 40-23-7

The Charlotte Checkers took a 1-0 lead on the Gladiators as Mark Lee was able to flip a centering pass behind Gwinnett netminder Dave Caruso just 5:25 into the first period. Blake Bellefeuille and Ryan Constant collected the assists as they hooked up to set up the marker.

Gwinnett equalized the contest at the 9:38 mark of the first period on Jon Awe’s 25th goal of the season. Awe threw a wrist shot past Charlotte netminder Chris Holt from the point for the power play goal for the Gladiators. Chad Painchaud and Andy Contois had the assists, cycling the puck deep in the Charlotte zone on the power play to set up the marker.

Lee collected two more goals for the Checkers in the second period to pick up a hat trick on the Gladiators and give Charlotte a 3-1 lead after two periods. His first came shorthanded as he finished a 2-on-1 break just 1:20 into the middle period, jamming the puck past Caruso for the marker. Bellefeuille and Holt had the assists for the Checkers on the goal.

Charlotte then took a 3-1 lead on Lee’s third goal of the game at the 9:16 mark of the second period beating Caruso on a breakaway for the marker. Bellefeuille notched his third assist of the game by springing Lee on the breakaway.

The Checkers added an empty net goal to put the game away with 22 seconds left in the third period. With Caruso pulled in favor of an extra attacker, Mike Ouellette was able to roll the puck into the empty cage for the marker. Jeff Lang and Daymen Rycroft collected the assist on the goal for the Checkers.

Caruso finished with 28 saves in the losing effort for the Gladiators. Gwinnett’s only goal came on the power play in the second period to set a new ECHL record for power play goals in a season as it was the Gladiators 116th of the year, surpassing the previous mark held by the Nashville Knights set during the 1995-96 season.
