CHECKERS IN 2-0 SERIES DEFICIT AFTER FLORIDA EVERBLADES TAKE GAME 2 WITH 7-2 WIN

The Everblades vaulted out to a 3-0 first-period lead and never looked back, taking a 7-2 victory over the Charlotte Checkers in Game 2 of the ECHL South Division Semi-Finals in Fort Myers. The win gives Florida a 2-0 lead in the best-of-five series, with the Everblades needing only one more victory to advance to the ECHL South Division Finals.

Seven different Florida players scored goals, and Everblades goalie, Craig Kowalski, was superb for a second night in a row with 36 saves in the convincing victory. Florida took advantage of their early lead and sustained it throughout the contest. The Everblades led 3-0 after one period and 6-1 after the second. Charlotte goalie, Chris Holt, was pulled shortly after allowing Florida’s fifth goal in the middle of the second period. Evan Lindsay finished the game in net for the Checkers playing 32 minutes and yielding the final two goals. The Everblades had five goals on their first 15 shots.

Dustin Johner, Mike Card, Ernie Hartlieb, David Brine, Brad Parsons, Brett Peterson and Derek Damon all scored for the Everblades. Johner and Brine each had a goal and two assists for Florida. Dusty Jamieson, playing in only his second game since suffering an injury in late November, scored one of Charlotte’s two goals on a power play. Jamieson was playing in place of Daymen Rycroft, who was injured in Game 1 Friday night. Blake Bellefeuille had the other Checkers goal.

Now the series shift back to Charlotte for Game 3 Tuesday night at Charlotte Bobcats Arena. Charlotte must win to extend the series to a fourth game, which is scheduled for Thursday at Bobcats Arena. The Checkers won three of four games played in the regular season against Florida at Bobcats Arena, including the last three.

Despite being down 2-0 in the series, the Checkers are not tossing in the towel. “It’s the best-of-five series, we’re coming back home and it’s not over till it’s over,” said Charlotte Captain, Jan Vodrazka. “The last step is the hardest and we are definitely going to make it hard. I’m still positive, of course, that we can win this series and now we have to take advantage of the home ice.”

The Everblades vaulted out to a 3-0 first-period lead. Johner got the scoring started when his shot from between the circles landed inside the left post and into the net at 7 minutes, 56 seconds. Card cleaned up a rebound after two Holt saves two minutes later to give the Everblades a 2-0 advantage. Nathan Gilles was given a double minor for high sticking at 14:03, and Florida took advantage. Hartleib’s first goal of the playoffs at 16:05 gave the Everblades a 3-0 lead after one period.

In the second period Florida scored twice in a 1:19 span to seize a 5-0 lead. Brine’s wrister from the slot made it 4-0 at 5:06. Parsons strike at 6:25 gave the Everblades the 5-0 advantage. Finally the Checkers would get on the board with a power-play goal, as Jamieson batted in a centering pass from Gillies in mid-air to get Charlotte on the board. But Peterson’s power-play goal with under a minute to go in the period gave Florida a 6-1 lead after two periods.

The two teams traded goals in the final period for the 7-2 final.

BLADES ROUT CHECKERS
Florida takes 2-0 lead in South Division semis

A night after winning by playing Charlotte’s rough and tumble style, the Florida Everblades went back to their bread and butter: an up-and-down, open skating game.

Smart move.

The top-seeded Blades used their superior speed and skill to hammer the No. 4 Charlotte Checkers 7-2 in Saturday’s Game 2 of the ECHL South Division semifinals in front of a crowd of 5,361 at Germain Arena. Florida holds a commanding two games to none lead in the best-of-5 series heading into Game 3 at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday at Charlotte (N.C.) Bobcats Arena.

“We feel pretty good but we got a long way to go,” Blades assistant captain Ernie Hartlieb said.

“Anything can happen if we don’t bring our game Tuesday night. They get a win and they’re right back in the series. We’re going to celebrate for an hour or so here and then we’ll start thinking about Game 3.”

In a testament to this team’s depth, Florida’s 10 goals in this series have been scored by 10 different players. Forwards Dustin Johner, David Brine, Brad Parsons and Derek Damon and defensemen Mike Card, Ernie Hartlieb and Brett Peterson found the back of the net Saturday a day after defenseman Franklin MacDonald and forwards Vince Bellissimo and Adam Taylor scored.

“That shows you how balanced we’ve been this year,” said Johner, who had a goal and two assists.

The Blades finished two goals short of tying the franchise’s record for most goals in a playoff game Saturday. The team has scored nine goals twice, the last against Greenville on April 22, 2006.

Florida played into Charlotte’s physical game plan in winning 3-2 on Friday but it didn’t have to trade blows early on Saturday. Instead, the Blades used their speed to beat the Checkers to loose pucks. They used their skill to zip around Charlotte’s bigger defensemen.

Florida scored the game’s first five goals, forcing Charlotte to pull starting goalie Chris Holt (13 saves on 18 shots) with 12:28 left in the second period. Checkers backup Evan Lindsay (14 saves on 16 shots) wasn’t much better.

With Florida enjoying a 5-0 lead, things got predictably ugly in the second period as the Checkers tried to get even with balled up fists. Blades defensemen Martin Tuma boxed Charlotte winger Shawn Vinz at 8:44 of the second period.

A few minutes later, Checkers 6-foot-2 tough guy Kenny Smith dropped his gloves during play and slugged Florida’s Adam Taylor in the face. Taylor hit his head on the ice and needed 15 stitches afterward.

“My helmet kind of slipped off so I wouldn’t really call it a cheap shot. I think it happens in the game,” said Taylor, holding a white towel to his head as blood poured down his neck. “Guys helmets always kind of fall off. I’m fine.”

Blades coach Gerry Fleming wasn’t surprised how physical the game got toward the end with Charlotte down big.

“That’s the nature of the playoffs. It’s only going to get chippier and chippier and more aggressive and more physical,” Fleming said. “As you go, it gets tougher and tougher. It’s not going to get any easier. We battled back. We gave just as well as we took. I expect the games up in Charlotte to be no different.”

Blades goalie Craig Kowalski, who is in the midst of the best season of his three-year professional career, had another solid game. He stopped 36 of 38 shots to pick his second consecutive playoff win.
