CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte Checkers president Jeff Longo announced today that the team has hired Jason Shaya as director of media relations and broadcasting/sales executive. Tim Donelli will continue to broadcast home games, alongside Shaya, and serve as the team chaplain through Hockey Ministries International.

Shaya, 26, is a native of Detroit where he grew up a loyal fan of the Detroit Red Wings. He comes to the Checkers after spending two seasons in the UHL (now IHL) with the Motor City Mechanics and, most recently, the Chicago Hounds. He served as director of media relations and broadcaster for both organizations.

With the Checkers, Shaya will be responsible for broadcasting all Checkers games, serving as the liaison between the team and the media, writing press releases and updating the team’s Web site. In addition to his media and broadcasting responsibilities, he will assist in the team’s ticket and corporate sales efforts.

Shaya began his broadcasting career with World Championship Wrestling (now defunct), then went on to become a sports producer for WDIV TV, the NBC affiliate in Detroit. He received a bachelor’s degree in radio and television communications from Madonna University and a broadcasting certificate from Specs Howard School of Broadcast Arts.

“This is an incredible opportunity to become a part of a well-respected hockey club,” said Shaya. “We have some exciting and innovative plans in-store for the broadcasts this season. I take pride in making fans feel the intensity of games over the air as if they were sitting right on the glass at each and every game.”
