HARTWICK AND GIBBONS AGREE TO TERMS

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Checkers continue to bolster their lineup. Today, they announced that defenseman Mike Hartwick and forward Ryan Gibbons have agreed to terms with the team.

Hartwick, 6-foot-3, 216 pounds, hails from Bedford, N. H. and is a product of Dartmouth College where he totaled 171 penalty minutes in 122 games. While at Dartmouth, Hartwick teamed with Checkers alumni Hugh Jessiman and Mike Ouellette. Hartwick started his professional career last season when he played seven games for the Wheeling Nailers. Checkers general manager and head coach Derek Wilkinson says that Hartwick is a force on the blue-line, “He is a physical stay-at-home defenseman who provides a tough presence on the ice.”

Gibbons, 6-foot-5, 212 pounds, is a five-year product of the Western Hockey League’s Seattle Thunderbirds. The hulking forward played last season with the Johnstown Chiefs where he accumulated 12 points (four goals, eight assists) and 38 penalty minutes in 57 games. Wilkinson suggests that Gibbons is at a crucial stage in his development, “He is a kid who has tremendous size and speed. We feel that he is going to have a break-out season this year.”

Both players are slated to attend training camp with the Hartford Wolf Pack of the American Hockey League.
