CHECKERS TRAINING CAMP BEGINS
Fantasy Camp Winners to Attend, Fan Fest Set for Saturday
Includes Exhibition Game, Street Hockey Tourney, Post Game Skate and National Anthem Tryouts
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Charlotte Checkers training camp is in full swing. Training camp is highlighted by an intra-squad blue vs. white game on Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 10 a.m.
General manager and head coach of the Charlotte Checkers, Derek Wilkinson, announced today that three players from the Checkers fantasy camp have been selected to participate in the Checkers main camp. Matt Withers, Mykul Haun and John Ulman were hand picked by the coaching staff to join the main camp. Withers, 25, hails from Laconia, N.H. and played three years at Plymouth State University in the NCAA before a brief stint with the Southern Professional Hockey League’s Jacksonville Barracudas last season. Haun, 25, is originally from Alameda, CA and was a teammate of Withers at Plymouth State. This is his first attempt at playing professional hockey. Ulman, 20, is from Toronto, Ontario Canada. Along with his father, he drove over 14 hours to participate at the fantasy camp before earning the spot Monday. The Checkers originally planned to select only two players, but the talent level of each player substantiated picking one more.
The Checkers have two exhibition games scheduled this weekend. The first game takes place in South Carolina against the Stingrays on Friday, Oct. 12 followed by a home game at the Extreme Ice Center in Indian Trail, North Carolina on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 1:30 p.m. Tickets can only be purchased at the Extreme Ice Center and not through the Checkers office.
Saturday afternoon is officially recognized as “Fan Fest” and will include activities for kids and their families and all tickets are just $5. The festivities start with a street hockey tournament at 9 a.m. The tournament will include a three vs. three player format and it will take place in the parking lot of the Extreme Ice Center. Also included in the day’s activities will be tryouts for national anthem singers from 10 a.m.- 11 a.m. Fan Fest will culminate in the exhibition game between the Checkers and the Columbia Inferno. A post game skate will take place directly after the exhibition game with all the Checkers players.
