CHARLOTTE, NC—The Charlotte Checkers have partnered with the Cannon School in Concord, N.C. for “Hockey for Haiti” on Thursday, Mar. 11 to raise funds for victims of the tragic earthquake that struck Haiti on Jan. 12.

To date, more than $9,200 has been raised in cash donations and fundraiser ticket sales and the total is expected to exceed $12,000 once in-game fundraising and ticket totals are accounted for. Cannon School students have also collected non-perishable food and other supply items to send to Haiti.

“We are thrilled with how our students took the initiative on this project to raise as many funds as possible and truly exceeded expectations,” remarked Cannon Middle School’s technology coordinator Leigh Northrup. “The people of Haiti need much aid in this disastrous time and the Checkers game is a great platform to channel fundraising efforts.”

The funds raised will be donated to the American Red Cross who is working with its partners in the global Red Cross and Red Crescent network, including the Haitian Red Cross and other partners, to assist those affected by this disaster. The donations will support emergency relief and recovery efforts such as deployed personnel, relief supplies and other resources.

“What started out as a phone call turned out to be our largest school fundraiser since we moved to Time Warner Cable Arena more than four years ago,” said Checkers COO Tera Black. “The Cannon School students have really taken this project to a new level and have shown a great deal of passion in helping the victims of this tragedy.”

The Checkers will donate to $5 to the American Red Cross from every $10 fundraising ticket sold. Any unused tickets purchased for the game will be donated to Barium Springs Home for Children and the Mayor’s Tickets for Kids program.
